Good morning political people, and welcome to today’s episode of Current2 Politics! I’m your host, Jake, and today we are breaking down the potential VP picks for Donald Trump as we near the November election.

On Saturday, presidential candidate Trump said he knows who his Vice President will be, though the actual pick will not be revealed until the Republican National Convention in July. He is looking for someone to carry on his legacy as president after his potential second term. Here, we’re taking a look at Trump’s top contenders for vice president.

Standing at an imposing 5 foot 8 and a net worth of 100 million, sources argue Doug Burgum is a likely pick for the former president’s number 2. As the governor of North Dakota, he is one of Trump’s most vocal defenders. In many ways, he is believed to echo former Trump VP Mike Pence; a palatable, conservative governor with little name recognition on the national stage. In addition, the pair are reportedly besties after work hours, another major advantage for Burgum. But, will the Republican Party want two old white dudes on the ticket?

Next up we have Ohio Senator JD Vance. At 39 years old, Vance may add some millennial flair to a race dominated by those far past retirement age. The former venture capitalist started out as one of Trump’s greatest critics, going so far as to call him “America’s Hitler” in 2016. However, since his time in office, Vance did a 180 into being one of his biggest supporters, frequently appearing alongside Trump at fundraisers and events. After the world watched Trump turn on former VP Pence for his lack of loyalty, will Vance’s recent support be enough to erase his criticisms?

As the son of Cuban immigrants, Senator Marco Rubio could draw in the much needed Hispanic vote for Trump’s campaign. Rubio, too, was a major critic of Trump in 2016, where they faced off for the GOP nomination. However, he may add a more moderate flavor, appealing to those turned off by Trump’s more extreme rhetoric.

Other potential candidates include Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate and avid Trump-supporter; Elise Stefanik, who could help win over skeptical suburban women that swung for Biden in 2020; and Ben Carson, a strong political ally of Trump who could also bring in minority voters.

Whoever it is, Trump confirmed that the mystery VP will be in attendance at Thursday’s CNN debate, so watch out for any familiar faces as candidates face off for a spot as America’s next president.
