In Must Know News:
- The much anticipated debate between VP Kamala Harris and Donald Trump is just 15 days away, and already arguments have ensued. An agreement was made between the Biden and Trump campaigns that the microphones would be muted between questions, but Harris’ campaign team wants them completely uncensored. Harris’ team believes that Trump can’t act “presidential” for 90 minutes on his own. The debate is set for September 10th, and who knows what to expect.
- Russia began a volley of missiles and drones into Ukraine at the stroke of midnight on Monday, killing 4 people and injuring over a dozen more. The 100 missiles and almost equal number of drones struck over half of Ukraine, damaging energy facilities and targeting main infrastructure points. Zelensky responded to the attack, calling it “vile”, as it became one of the largest defensive maneuvers from Russia in recent months.
- Dominic Thiem, the 2020 US Open champion, exited the 2024 tournament in the first round, after losing three times to Ben Shelton. Thiem, who previously announced his planned retirement at the end of this year, injured his wrist following his Grand Slam victory, inevitably causing him to step out and express his gratitude in an emotional farewell to his fans. The opening day did see victories from German 4th seed Alexander Zverev and 2022 finalist Casper Ruud.
- On Monday, special counsel Jack Smith urged an appeals court to reinstate the classified documents case against former President Donald Trump, submitting an initial brief in Atlanta that argued against Judge Aileen Cannon’s decision to dismiss the charges in July. Trump’s lawyers have until September 26th to submit a response to Smith’s arguments. Oohhhh, things are heating up—- not too hot though, more like…. room temperature.
- Finally, the DNC and the Democratic Party of Georgia filed a civil suit Monday against the Georgia State Election Board arguing that two items passed by the board this month conflict with state law mandating certification of election results AND –get this– that the board did not follow rulemaking procedures as required by state law. Well, we’re very litigious here at Current2 today, aren’t we?
