In Must Know News…
- Last night, Joe Biden and Donald Trump faced off in the first debate of the 2024 election season. Between a flurry of personal insults, verified falsehoods, and golf handicap comparisons, some key issues discussed included: the economy, abortion rights, immigration, the candidates' ages, and the fate of our democracy.
- In a strong start, neither candidate shook hands or acknowledged each other before the debate. Quickly following, on the economy, they each blamed the other for inflation and took credit for the creation of jobs. When asked about how they would approach abortion rights, Trump commended the overturning of Roe v. Wade, though he said he would not ban abortion pills. Biden stressed the importance of abortion being a decision made by a doctor, and ended the discussion saying he would reinstate the ruling.
- On immigration, Trump repeated a familiar argument: that immigrants crossing the border under Biden are criminals, stealing American jobs and committing violent crimes. Biden defended his border legislation, touting a bipartisan bill that was killed in the Senate earlier this year.
- Moderators also asked Trump about the January 6th insurrection, and if he would accept a loss in 2024. After being pressed multiple times, Trump denied responsibility for the breach on the capitol. He continued by saying that he will accept the 2024 election results, given they are fair and uncorrupted.
- All in all, at the end of the debate, talk among Dems focused on replacing Biden, as his advanced age hindered his performance. As for Trump, fact checkers confirmed that many of his statements were false. Overall, America believes Trump won this one.
