Goood Morning! Today is Monday, July 1st, my name is Gabe, and you’re listening to Current2, brought to you by Just Bagels! Let’s see what’s going on in the world…
In Must Know News…
- Plagiarism AI, I mean Perplexity AI, is taking some heat after allegedly ripping off sources without crediting them. Amazon is investigating them now as Perplexity hosts the tools it used in the grand theft AI on their servers. In an example of the correct way to do business, Time magazine just struck a deal with OpenAI to allow the company’s AI to train on its content.
- The far-right, anti-immigration National Rally (RN) party has won the first round of France’s parliamentary election this Sunday, potentially putting the French government under nationalist rule for the first time since WWII. The second round of the election is set to wrap up July 7th, and President Emmanual Macron has urged all voters to rally behind “clearly republican and democratic” candidates, whilst several of France’s left-wing political leaders have also called upon their third-placed candidates to drop out of the election following Sunday’s results.
- It’s time now for our Supreme Court update: or, how we learned to start worrying and love our qualms. Friday, the Court’s conservative supermajority overturned Chevron v. NRDC, a 40-year precedent that required our courts to defer to federal agencies when creating regulations on unclear or vaguely written laws; as a result of this overturning, federal agencies’ power to pass and protect regulations will be significantly reduced as the federal judiciary now holds the final say over any and all approval. In a written dissent, S.C. Justice Elana Kagan condemned the ruling, asserting that the court’s majority has turned itself into “the country’s administrative czar.”

- In an update on the presidential race post-debate, Biden says he’s not f***ing leaving despite some calls from his party– I might have paraphrased that… Biden held a rally on Friday, much more tenacity as opposed to the low energy he displayed during the debate.
- Just yesterday, thousands of Ultra-Orthodox men in Jerusalem clashed with police in the street protests after the Supreme Court there ordered for them to begin enlisting for military service.
- Congrats to anyone with a car in Massachusetts: Uber and Lyft drivers there now earn $32.50 per hour minimum! This is in addition to a $175M settlement the companies had to pay for previously mistreating these drivers. At that rate, I want poland springs provided backseat, please and thank you.
- Our final story of the day is a big one. Category 4 big. Hurricane Beryl just grew to this quote “extremely dangerous” size over the weekend and is heading for the Caribbean. Please tune into today’s deeper dive for all the details on this one.
