  • O.J. Simpson, the infamous football star and cultural icon, died yesterday at 76. He was most known for his role in the 1995 murder trial of his ex-wife and her friend in Los Angeles. The trial was one of the most watched events in TV history, and forced America to face its centuries long struggle with race, policing, and criminal justice through the lens of a pop culture icon.
  • A former Virginia assistant principal was charged after a 6 year old shot their teacher in 2023. A special grand jury ruled that the administrator, Ebony Parker, failed to properly respond to multiple reports that the child posed a threat to others, including one that claimed he had a gun on the day of the shooting. Parker now faces 8 counts of child abuse, totalling 40 years if convicted.
  • A Vietnamese real estate tycoon was sentenced to death in a 27 billion dollar fraud case, the largest ever in the nation. Truong My Lan is a Vietnamese businesswoman who used Vietnam’s central bank to provide loans for herself and her powerful allies. Her sentence is unusually harsh, and is part of Vietnam’s national corruption crackdown that has already affected many Vietnamese elite.

  • In an update to the Shohei Ohtani sports betting scandal, his former interpreter has now been charged with stealing $16M from Ohtani. Ohtani is now fully considered a victim in the case while his former interpreter is on the hook for up to 30 years in federal prison if convicted.
  • Former Russian opposition leader, Aleksei Navalny, just died in prison. However, before he died, it’s now being reported that he wrote a memoir on his opposition against Putin, set for release this Fall. The title, “Patriot.”
  • Morgan Geyser, the woman involved in the titled ‘Slender Man’ attack, has been denied release from her 40 year psychiatric institute sentence. Back in 2014 at the age of 12, she stabbed her sixth-grade peer in order to earn the favor of the fictional character, Slender Man, hence the name.
  • U.S. measles cases have reportedly surged 30% this year as the CDC warns the U.S. is now under quote “renewed threat” by the disease which is still technically considered “eliminated.” We’ll have to wait and see how that status changes…
