- The Biden administration announced that Israel’s use of US weapons may have violated international law. This is the US’s strongest criticism of Israel yet, however, no definitive examples of unlawfully utilized US weapons were given. At the same time, the UN voted to give Palestine new rights and privileges, though a vote for its full membership in the UN was vetoed by the US.
- Biden plans to raise tariffs on Chinese clean energy goods, starting as early as next week. The announcement will maintain the tariffs imposed on China by former president Trump, but will expand to include electric vehicles, medical supplies, and solar energy equipment. For electric vehicles, the tariff rate is set to quadruple from 25% to 100%. Officials hope this will level the economic playing field and benefit American companies.
- Eurovision 2024 concluded with a historic win by Switzerland’s Nemo. They are the first non-binary artist ever to win the famed European song contest, and the first Swiss winner since 1988. The victory comes after a contest riddled with controversy, with the Dutch contestant being dramatically disqualified and many protesting Israel’s inclusion.
