In breaking news yesterday, Iran launched a massive attack on Israel, firing over 300 missiles and drones. This was an attempt by Iran to retaliate after Israel had previously struck an Iranian embassy in Syria.

The Iranian missiles and unmanned drones began raining down on Israel overnight. Israel's advanced defense systems were able to shoot down 99% of the incoming projectiles before they could reach their targets. However, one drone managed to get through and hit a military base, critically injuring a 10-year-old child.

Iran has claimed their attack on Israel was payback for a previous Israeli airstrike on April 1st that destroyed an Iranian consulate building in Damascus, Syria. Several high-ranking officers of Iran’s Revolutionary Guard Corps were killed as a result of Israel’s military operation. In response, Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenie vowed to respond with “destructive might.”

After the Iranian strikes, Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu urgently met with his security advisors to discuss how to respond. While relieved most of Iran's missiles were stopped, Netanyahu stated Israel would not let such Iranian “aggression” go unanswered. Although, he did not allude to how exactly Israel would respond to the attack.

The United States and many other allies of Israel have condemned Iran’s airstrike attack, with President Joe Biden acknowledging that the U.S. military were involved in intercepting some of the incoming drones and missiles. U.S. forces have claimed to intercept over 80 drones and at least 6 missiles from Iran.

President Biden and his national security team remain focused on containing a potential large-scale war in the Middle East. Additionally, The U.S. have stated that they will refrain from engaging in any offensive attacks as a result of the airstrikes.

Iran has told the United Nations that their military operations against Israel have officially concluded. However, according to an Iranian state news outlet, Iran’s President Ebrahim Raisi stated that any “new aggression against the interests of the Iranian nation will be met with a heavier and regrettable response.”

As tensions rapidly escalate following Iran's massive missile attack, the world will be watching closely to see how Israel responds.
