Happy Monday, everyone! Welcome to today’s episode of Current2, brought to you by Just Bagels. My name is Gabe, and today is July 15th. Let’s get started with today’s headlines.

In Must Know News:

  • We’re sure you’ve heard the news by now, but in case you haven’t, Donald Trump narrowly survived an assassination attempt at a Pennsylvania rally Saturday after a lone gunman now identified as twenty-year old Thomas Matthew Crooks fired four shots at the former president from a nearby rooftop, piercing Trump’s right ear and killing one attendee while critically wounding two others.
  •  Although the shooter was quickly neutralized by the Secret Service, many are still wondering how the agency failed so outstandingly to protect the former president, especially since multiple attendees saw Crooks crawling on the nearby rooftop several minutes before the young man fired at Trump. What’s more, Crooks’ position was only 150 yards away from the former President: how he was able to climb atop a building so close to rally without detection will be just one of the many questions lawmakers will have for Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle, who’s been summoned to testify before Congress this following Monday on July 22nd.
  • President Biden and Trump both called for unity following the shooting, with Biden addressing the nation from the Oval Office Sunday to call Americans to “take a step back,” saying “Politics must never be a literal battlefield, God forbid, a killing field.” Amid our nation’s escalating tensions, both recent and years-in-the-making, we hope that the call for peace and unity be both sustained and bipartisan, and that peace itself never be an issue that is weaponized.
