South Africa witnesses strong voter turnout in their integral election (Reuters, AP)

South Africans saw high voter turnout this Wednesday in the most significant election since the end of apartheid. At risk is the African National Conference’s parliamentary majority, which has held strong for thirty years since the party led South Africa into democracy in 1994. Presently, with the nation stricken by crime, high unemployment, and millions in poverty, the ANC faces fierce criticism and may very well be forced to co-govern with its opposing parties. 

Supreme Court Justice Alito refused to recuse himself from cases despite alleged bias (AP, CNN)

Justice Samuel Alito refused to recuse himself from cases involving the 2020 presidential election or the January 6th Capitol riots. Calls for the justice to step aside initially arose when two controversial flags that had been carried by the January 6th rioters were seen flying at several of his properties. Alito claimed that the flags were in fact hoisted by his wife and further stated that the incidents did not meet the criteria that warranted his recusal. 

Pro-golfer Scottie Scheffler has all charges against him dropped (AP, Reuters)

Charges against the world’s top golfer Scottie Scheffler were dropped this Wednesday. Scheffler was arrested in Louisville two weeks ago and charged with four counts, including the felony second-degree assault of a police officer. Since then, the LMPD has taken corrective action against Scheffler’s arresting officer and all charges have been dropped “with prejudice,” meaning they are unable to be refiled

North Korea sends balloons full of trash to South Korea in retaliation (CNN)

North Korea sent over 150 balloons full of trash across the border into South Korea. The North Korean government claims the balloons are retaliation after South Korean activists sent similar balloons full of food, medicine, and propaganda leaflets into North Korea.

The MLB includes segregated state from “Negro League” in historical record (CNN)

The MLB incorporated statistics from the formerly segregated Negro League into it’s historical records. As a result, Ty Cobb was ousted by Negro League player Josh Gibson for the highest career batting average in MLB history.

“Stranger Things” actress Millie Bobby Brown married Jon Bon Jovi’s son, Jake Bongiovi, in a small family wedding. The stars are 20 and 22, respectively. 

First day of Trump’s hush money trial ends without verdict (CBS)

The first day of jury deliberations for the Trump hush money trial ended with no verdict.
