Masters champion Scottie Scheffler was arrested Friday morning on his way to the second round of the PGA championship in Louisville, Kentucky. Scheffler was charged with assaulting a police officer after allegedly attempting to drive around backed up traffic due to a pedestrian fatality investigation. The time and place of the arrest were listed as 6:20 am at Gate 1 of the Valhalla Golf Club.

The incident holding up traffic involved a pedestrian being struck by a bus on their way to work for a tournament vendor, killing them instantly. Officers arrived on the scene to conduct an investigation, halting traffic around the event. Traffic was backed up for about a mile in both directions on the only road leading to the Valhalla Golf Club, the site of this week’s PGA tournament.

According to police, Scheffler was stopped by a detective attempting to give him instructions when he quote “refused to comply” and accelerated forward, striking the officer. The detective was dragged to the ground and suffered abrasions, swelling, and pain in his wrist as a result. Sheffler was booked for second-degree assault of a police officer, third-degree criminal mischief, reckless driving, and disregarding traffic signals from an officer directing traffic. The top golfer now has a court hearing scheduled for Tuesday.

In a statement released on Instagram, Scheffler chalked his behavior up to a big misunderstanding, stating he did not mean to disobey officers and was unclear about what he was being asked to do. He said he was not allowed to reveal specifics of the investigation because it was still ongoing, but emphasized that he never intended to disregard police instructions.

After his arrest, Scheffler continued on to play in that day’s tournament. According to officials from the Louisville Metro Department of Corrections, Scheffler was released at 8:40 am and arrived at the course less than an hour before he was scheduled to tee off at 10:08 am. He went on to shoot five under par, after reportedly warming up in his jail cell.
