In Must Know News…
- The U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration is set to reclassify marijuana to a Schedule III drug, recognizing its medical benefits and lower abuse potential, in a move endorsed by Attorney General Merrick Garland as part of President Biden’s initiative to reform drug policies and tackle racial disparities. This policy shift could boost medical research and the cannabis industry.
- A U.S. appeals court ruled that state-run health insurance plans in North Carolina and West Virginia must cover gender-affirming surgeries for transgender individuals, finding that the exclusion of such treatments discriminates based on sex and gender identity. This decision, which is expected to be challenged in the U.S. Supreme Court, upheld rulings that the states' policies were unconstitutional and could not justify denying medically necessary care.
- Protests at Columbia escalated overnight after students broke into and occupied a building on their main campus. The protestors now face expulsion and students are warned to stay away from the campus. Other universities across the country are also experiencing protest escalations, with the last day of classes at UNC Chapel Hill being canceled on Tuesday after protestors removed an American flag and replaced it with the Palestinian flag.
