Good morning everyone! Today is Thursday, July 18th, my name is Gabe, and you’re listening to Current2, brought to you by Just Bagels!
In Must Know News:
- President Biden had a terrible, horrible, no good, very bad day yesterday. Not only did he test positive for COVID-19: he also lost the support of prominent Democrat Rep. Adam Schiff, who urged the president to “pass the torch” and withdraw from the presidential race. Biden’s made it clear that he’s going nowhere, however, and his patience with Democratic lawmakers has reportedly begun to thin when faced with pushback from over his candidacy. No matter what the outcome of this election might be, things are sure gonna be interesting in the ol’ U. S. of A. come November.
- NFL Hall of Famer Terell Davis was handcuffed and removed from a United Airlines plane last Friday. Here’s the story: apparently, Davis walked up behind a flight attendant and tapped his arm to ask for a cup of ice, to which the flight attendant shouted, “Don’t hit me!” and hurried away. When the plane landed, Davis was apprehended by FBI agents who handcuffed him and took him into custody. The two-time Superbowl champ has since expressed that he believes race played a significant role in the incident; United has since apologized to Davis.
- You know, the news has been a little serious lately, hasn’t it? Well luckily for all of us, there’s something else that we can finally talk about that isn’t all doom and gloom: the Emmys! The award show’s nominations were announced yesterday, and “Shogun” is in the lead with a whopping 25 nods while “The Bear” set a new record for the most nominations for a comedy series with 23. Behind that is “Only Murders in the Building” “True Detective: Night Country” and “The Crown”. You know, with how good TV has been lately, it really is a shame that this year’s movies can’t keep up in quality. Whatever, though— I’ll just keep binge-watching.

In Other Notable News:
- Germany plans to cut its military aid to Ukraine in half next year. The 3 billion dollar budget cut is the result of overall spending cuts within the German government, leaving little wiggle room for foreign aid.
- Lionel Messi is facing calls to apologize after a video came out of the Argentinian team singing a racist chant after their Copa America win. It is unclear if Messi himself engaged in the chant, but as the team captain and president of Argentina’s soccer federation, it’s kind of in his job description.
- A Stegosaurus skeleton sold for almost 45 million dollars at Sotheby’s auction. The high-class dino, appropriately named Apex, set the record for most expensive dinosaur fossil ever sold. What makes him so special, you ask? The fossil is nearly completely intact, as well as one of the most recognizable in the world.
- Paris mayor Anne Hidalgo took a swim in the Seine river to prove its cleanliness before the Olympic games. Earlier this year, the Seine tested positive for E. coli, but has since been cleaned up; at least, I hope so, or else Paris will need some Olympic sized bathrooms!
