Summary

Stocks plummeted on Monday, raising fears of a U.S. recession as Dow and S&P saw their worst performances in over two years, though economists advise caution in assuming the worst. RFK Jr. admitted in a resurfaced video to dumping a dead bear cub in Central Park a decade ago, sparking controversy among conspiracy theorists. A judge ruled that Google has been exploiting users and stifling competition, marking the company as a monopolist. Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas failed to disclose luxury trips provided by billionaire Harlan Crow, continuing his pattern of not reporting gifts. Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina resigned and fled the country after a deadly government crackdown on protests, ending her 15-year reign.

Today's Script

Good morning Current2 fam! My name is Gabe, today is Tuesday, August 6th, and you’re listening to Current2, brought to you by Just Bagels. Let’s get to the news!

In Must Know News:

  • With a major dip in stocks on Monday, the fear of a U.S. recession is progressively looming. Major players like Dow and S & P saw their worst performances in over two years, further reflecting the rocky footing of the nation’s economy. However, economists urge consumers not to cry wolf quite yet, as this could only be a sign of leveraged trades used to increase stock value and likely not permanent.
  • The decade-long legend of the deceased bear in Central Park has been solved, and you won’t believe the culprit: it was RFK Jr. In a resurfaced video with the presidential candidate speaking in an interview with controversial comedian Roseanne Barr where Kennedy stated the bear cub’s carcass somehow ended up in his vehicle and he dumped the body in the park late that evening. Conspiracy theorists are having a field day with the news, attacking Kennedy’s supposed animal rights activism and recent announcements made about the politician, including the one where a worm was eating his brain. Do you all remember that?
  • Google is a certified bully as a judge ruled on Monday that the search engine has been illegally exploiting users with its dominance to drive out all competition. In an apparent move to stifle innovation to maintain dependency on the internet program, the year long case came to the conclusion that Google is a monopolist and the decision will no doubt set the company back.
  • Well, I hate to sound like a broken record, but Clarence Thomas just can’t stop disclosing gifts, y’all! The Supreme Court justice failed to publicly disclose a round-trip between Hawaii and New Zealand in November 2010 that he took on billionaire and GOP mega-donor Harlan Crow’s private jet. Thomas certainly has a taste for the finer things: decked out RVs, million-dollar trips aboard jets and superyachts; he’s oh so humble about it though, and always keeps mum!
  • Bangladesh PM Sheikh Hasina resigned from her office Monday and fled the country after hundreds of people were killed in a government crackdown last month that targeted demonstrations against the discrimination of government job quotas. Hasina’s exile marks the end of her 15-year reign as PM over Bangladesh, with army chief General Waker-Uz-Zaman announcing in a televised address that an interim government will soon be formed.
