- The Supreme Court rejected a conservative attack against the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau that challenged the bureau’s funding mechanism. In a ruling of 7-2, the court upheld the CFPB’s funding design, with Justice Clarence Thomas writing the majority opinion in a break from conservative justices Samuel Alito and Niel Gorsuch. President Biden called the ruling an absolute success, boasting that the agency had provided nearly $9 billion in relief under his administration.
- Texas governor Greg Abbott pardoned former Army sergeant Daniel Perry this Thursday. Perry was convicted last year for the murder of Garrett Foster, a BLM protester who Perry fatally shot in July 2020. Governor Abbott’s decision follows the Texas Board of Pardons and Paroles’ unanimous recommendation of a full pardon for Perry. The board also awarded him full restoration of firearm rights.
- President Biden has blocked the release of audio recordings related to his classified documents interview with special counsel Robert Hur. Biden’s decision comes after Attorney General Merrick Garland wrote a letter to the president asserting that the recordings fall under the scope of executive privilege. In response, the House Judiciary Committee has voted to advance contempt proceedings against Garland.
